A method of canning foodstuffs and similar perishable substances employs cans consisting of a tough, impact-resisting synthetic resin material which is capable of being formed into cans, capable of being sealed, for example by bonding, adhesive or welding, especially by a hot wire or radio frequency heating, and capable of withstanding cooking temperature. Suitable materials include polypropylene, polybutylene, polyvinylidene chloride, and polyester, or laminates of the two former with the two latter. The Figure shows a suitable apparatus for canning according to the invention, in which the cans 11 after filling and sealing pass on to a conveyer belt 12 and are carried through a trough 14 containing a bath of heated liquid, suitably ethylene glycol or aqueous sodium silicate. Adjacent the inlet end of the trough are radio-frequency heating units 16.
