Preserving food.-In packing fruit, meat, &c., in glass containers i<1> in a sterile manner with the aid of steam which is introduced through a nozzle h having an outlet h<3>, a trap g for condensed water is provided between the nozzle h and the steam generator a. The trap g has an insulated handle l with a protecting partition m and is connected by a flexible tube f with the generator a so that by raising the trap the water can be run into the generators. The lid b is secured to the generator by clips d and has an intermediate rubber washer c. The end h<2> of nozzle h is flared outwards and is flattened so that it can be rapidly withdrawn from between the lid i and the container i<1> and the lid closed, a vacuum being obtained in the container i<1> on cooling.
