Abstract

Diphenyl halogenated by any suitable process, is treated under pressure with an aqueous solution of caustic alkali at elevated temperature. According to examples, p-chlorodiphenyl and o-chlorodiphenyl are treated with aqueous caustic alkali as above. The isolation of the products is described, together with tables giving the yields in various circumstances. The invention is stated to be applicable to m-hydrodiphenyl also, and the halogen-substituted diphenyls in general may be employed.
