Abstract

2-Mercaptoarylenethiazoles are purified by treating the crude product in the form of water-wet pellets with an organic solvent for the impurities which is heavier than water and immiscible therewith. The preferred solvent is carbon bisulphide, but carbon tetrachloride or chloroform may also be used. The treatment may be carried out either as a continuous or as a batch process. Thiazoles to which the process of the invention may be applied include 2 - mercaptobenzothiazole, 2 - mercaptotolylthiazoles, 2 - mercaptoxylylthiazoles, 2 - mercaptoalkoxybenzothiazoles, 2 - mercapto - 4 - phenylbenzothiazole, and the 2 - mercaptonaphthothiazoles. The 2-mercaptoarylenethiazoles which are purified by the process of the present invention may be prepared by any convenient method. Methods mentioned by which 2-mercaptobenzothiazole may be prepared include processes starting from dianilinomethane, sulphur and carbon bisulphide; from formanilide and sulphur, with or without carbon bisulphide; from thiocarbanilide carbon bisulphide and sulphur dichloride; from anilinobenzothiazole and hydrogen sulphide; from phenyl mustard oil and sulphur; from diphenylthiourea, carbon bisulphide and sulphur; from anhydroformaldehyde-aniline and sulphur; from o-o1-diaminodiphenyldisulphide and carbon bisulphide; from aniline sulphite, aniline and carbon bisulphide; from aniline, carbon bisulphide and nitrobenzene; and from aniline nitrobenzene sulphur and carbon bisulphide.
