Abstract
Ketoximes are subjected to the Beckmann rearrangement to give amides or lactams in a process in which the ketoxime, dissolved in a solvent which distils at the reaction temperature, is added to hot sulphuric acid. The concentration of the ketoxime in the solvent is such that the evaporation of the latter causes sufficient cooling. Solvents specified are: benzene, cyclohexane, symmetrical dichlorethylene, saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons and the lower aliphatic ethers. In the examples, caprolactam is prepared by treating cyclohexanone-oxime in solution in cyclohexane or ethylene dichloride with sulphuric acid. The process may be continuous.
