Abstract

Catalytic hydrogenation, especially of safrole to dihydrosafrole or furfurol to furfuryl alcohol is effected in the presence of a catalyst produced by the interaction of an alkali-metal borohydride with at least one soluble salt of nickel, copper or cobalt. Examples relate to (1) the hydrogenation of a 30 per cent. solution of safrole in ethyl acetate in the presence of absolute ethyl alcohol at atmospheric pressure and 180 DEG C., employing a nickel boride catalyst; (6) safrole in absolute alcohol hydrogenated at 60 DEG C. and 50 Kg. per sq. cm. pressure using a cobalt boride catalyst; (7) as in (6) employing a copper boride catalyst and a temperature of 90 DEG C.; (9) a solution of furfurol in ethyl acetate hydrogenated at normal temperature and pressure with a nickel boride catalyst and with the addition of a small amount of aqueous caustic soda in the later stages. Specification 700,398 is referred to.ALSO:Catalytic hydrogenation particularly of safrate to dihydrosafrate and furfurol to furfuryl alcohol (see Group IV(b)) is effected in the presence of a catalyst produced by the interaction of an alkali-metal borohydride with at least one soluble salt of nickel, copper or cobalt. The alkali-metal borohydride is preferably added to the metal salt solution preferably slightly acidified, but solutions in organic solvents such as methanol may be used. The precipitation may be carried out in the presence of a carrier such as infusorial earth. According to examples an aqueous solution of sodium borohydride is added slowly to an aqueous nickel chloride hexahydrate solution with agitation. The precipitate is washed with water and absolute ethyl alcohol nickel chloride or acetate may replace the chloride or cobaltous chloride or copper sulphate may be used. Potassium borohydride may replace the sodium salt. Specification 700,398, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.
