Abstract
Triisobutylene is obtained by treating diisobutylene or the co-dimer of iso- and n-butylene with sulphuric acid of about 60-80 per cent concentration at about 40-120 DEG C. Dimer and co-dimer of iso- and n-butylene, which are present in the crude product may be recycled. Isobutylene may be used as starting material, the diisobutylene obtained by polymerization being isolated from the products before use. The product, preferably after purification with caustic alkali may be hydrogenated using, e.g. a nickel catalyst to obtain a safety fuel. The process may be operated in a continuous manner.
