Abstract

In a process for the production of phenol by the decomposition of isopropylbenzene peroxides with acidic catalysts, the yield of phenol is increased by heat decomposition of the material in the peroxide decomposition mixture which boils above the boiling-point of phenol and acetophenone to give phenol and some a -methylstyrene. The decomposition may be promoted, e.g. by acid. The high-boiling starting-material, mainly cumylphenol, is obtained by first distilling off acetone, a -methylstyrene, phenol and acetophenone from the reaction mixture resulting from the peroxide decomposition. Four examples of the process are given. Specifications 610,293, 626,095, 629,429 and 649,286 are referred to.
