Abstract
Phenol and acetophenone or para-cresol and para-methyl acetophenone are made by heating 1:1 - diphenyl ethane - 1 - hydroperoxide or 1:1 - di - para - tolyl ethane - 1 - hydroperoxide in an acid medium. Preferably the starting material, which may be the reaction product obtained by oxidizing 1:1-diphenyl ethane or 1:1-di-p-tolyl ethane still containing some unconverted hydrocarbon, is mixed with dilute acid, e.g. 10-25 per cent sulphuric acid, and the mixture is heated to about 100 DEG C., preferably by passing in steam which removes the decomposition products as they are formed. Examples describe the preparation of phenol, acetophenone, para-cresol and para-methyl acetophenone according to the invention. Specification 748,566 is referred to.
