Abstract
b -Ionylidene acetaldehyde, and C18 ketone and Vitamin A acid therefrom are obtained by reducing b -ionylidene acetonitrile with LiAlH4 at low temperatures, followed by hydrolysis, and, if desired, conversion by known methods into the above-mentioned derivatives. The aldehyde is further separated as bisulphite. In examples, the nitrile is reduced as described in various solvents, followed by hydrolysis with aqueous acid, conversion into bisulphite compound and separation from the latter with aqueous alkali. Specification 684,757 is referred to. Particulars of the U.V. absorption spectra of the b -ionylidene acetaldehyde and a number of its derivatives are given, including that of the semicarbazone and phenyl semicarbazone.
