Abstract

559,206. Keto-alcohols. DREYFUS, H., and DREWITT, J. G. N. June 10, 1942, No. 7939. [Class 2 (iii)] Keto-alcohols are produced by condensing an aliphatic ketone with an aliphatic aldehyde in an alkaline medium, the molar ratio of ketone to aldehyde being at least 7 : 1 and water being present in amount at least equal to the weight of the aldehyde. The product may be converted to the corresponding unsaturated ketone by heating to 100-130‹C. with zinc chloride or iodine or to the corresponding diol by reduction. The condensing agent may be an alkali or sodium sulphite or bisulphite, the last-named producing an alkaline medium by combination with aldehyde. Examples describe the production of butanol-1-one-3 from acetone and formaldehyde and 2-methylbutanol-1-one-3 from methyl ethyl ketone and formaldehyde.
