Abstract
559,590. Phenol-aldehyde resins. JICWOOD, Ltd., and FARINA, R. L. J. June 22, 1942, No. 8546. [Class 2 (iii)] Cold hardening resinous products suitable for use as adhesives in the bonding of wood pieces and plywood sheets are obtained by condensing resorcinol and an alkaline catalyst at a pH of 4-4.5 and adding to the condensation product a basic hydroxide in sufficient quantity to raise the pH to at least 6.5 ; the product is self-hardening at room temperatures. The condensation product may be obtained by condensing 200 parts resorcinol, 150-200 parts 40 per cent. formaldehyde, 40 parts acetone and 0.7 parts sodium sulphite at 40-60‹ C. for about six hours. 2-4 c.c. of a 10.N solution of sodium hydroxide is added for every 100 gs. of the condensate the product hardening in three-quarters to two hours according to the amount of alkali added.
