Abstract

Artificial threads are obtained by spinning a solution of cellulose ester or ether containing a condensation product of a polyvinyl alcohol and an aldehyde, e.g. such as described in Specification 337,806, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]. Examples of spinning solutions are: cellulose acetate or ethyl cellulose dissolved in a mixture of methylene chloride and alcohol together with a condensation product of polyvinyl alcohol and formaldehyde; hydrolysed cellulose acetate dissolved in an acetone-alcohol mixture with an addition of a condensation product of polyvinyl alcohol and acetaldehyde and ethyl cellulose dissolved in an alcohol-benzene mixture with an addition of a condensation product of polyvinyl alcohol and benzaldehyde. The products are stated to be of increased strength, dry and wet and also resistant to creasing. The added substance is usefully added in an amount of 5-30 per cent on the weight of the cellulose derivative.
