Abstract

<PICT:0482814/IV/1> Filaments of organic derivatives of cellulose are crimped by subjecting to pressure filaments softened with a medium comprising a solvent for the cellulose derivative, the pressure being applied whilst the filaments are disposed in a criss-cross manner. An aqueous solution of the solvent is preferably employed, and for cellulose acetate is an aqueous solution of acetone of less than 30 per cent strength. Filaments cut to the desired length are placed in the chamber 1, the perforated plate 3 screwed down so as to exert a pressure of about 1/2 lb. per sq. in. and the lid 7 screwed down; the softening agent is then admitted at 10 and removed at 12, after which a current of hot air is passed in at 14 and out at 12. The filaments may be softened before being placed in the chamber 1. The crimped filaments may be spun and woven with other filaments to give cross dyeing effects.
