Abstract

Cellulose is acetylated in the presence of a aldehyde, e.g acetaldehyde, paraldehyde, propionic aldehyde, or butyric aldehyde, in amount not less than 20 per cent calculated on the weight of the cellulose, until the cellulose acetate produced is soluble in acetone. In an example, cotton linters, pretreated by means of glacial acetic acid in the presence of a sulphuric acid--phosphoric acid catalyst, are acetylated by means of a mixture comprising acetic anhydride and acetaldehyde, until the product is soluble in acetone. The amount of aldehyde used is between 25 and 100 c.c. per 100 gms. of cellulose. Specification 15754/14, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], is referred to.
