541,167. Cellulose and rubber compounds. BRITISH RUBBER PRODUCERS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, and FARMER. E. H. July 26, 1940, Nos. 5611/41 (divided out of 535,889) and 9561/41. [Class 2 (ii)] Compounds of rubber with cellulose esters or ethers and maleic anhydride are obtained by heating the ingredients together, preferably in presence of a peroxide catalyst. If desired a rubber-maleic anhydride may be first obtained and this compound may then be heated with a cellulose ester or ether. Cellulose acetate, nitrate, or other ester, or ethyl or benzyl cellulose or other ether may be used. In an example, crepe rubber, maleic anhydride, ethyl cellulose, and benzoyl peroxide are dissolved in xylene, placed on a steam bath, and then heated under reflux at 150-160‹ C. A product is obtained which is completely soluble in ethyl alcohol, acetone, ether, and benzene, but insoluble in petroleum ether. The product may be plasticized, e.g. by milling with dibutyl phthalate or " Arochlor." Other examples describe the production of products from the same ingredients but in varying proportions. When the proportion of rubber is greater than that of the ethyl cellulose, the product is insoluble in ethyl alcohol. In another example, a solution of cellulose acetate, rubber, maleic anhydride, and benzoyl peroxide in tetrachlorethane is heated at 146‹ C. The solvent is removed and the residue is dissolved in acetone and reprecipitated with alcohol. In another example, a solution of cellulose nitrate, rubber, and maleic anhydride in amyl acetate is heated to 150‹ C. The product obtained is soluble in alcohol and acetone but not in petroleum ether. The rubber may be used in the form of crepe, smoked sheet, or natural, preserved, or synthetic latex. The products may be used for making transparent wrappings or bottle caps, or for other purposes. Specifications 507,996 and 535,889 are referred to.
