Abstract
Polyvinyl esters, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, acetate or butyrate, are saponified in a medium comprising an alkali, a lower aliphatic alcohol and water in an amount of 1 to 10 per cent of the total weight of liquid to yield products soluble or dispersible in water. The original esters may be partial esters containing hydroxyl groups; the amount of base is preferably small, e.g. 0.5-2 and preferably 0.5-1 per cent of weight of the ester. In examples, polyvinyl acetate (100 per cent acetate) is refluxed with methyl alcohol until dissolved, the solution then mixed with caustic soda dissolved in aqueous methyl alcohol and the mixture vigorously stirred at 50 DEG C. until the saponified compound separates out. The products are useful for the manufacture of yarns &c. soluble or dispersible in water, e.g. as described in Specification 563,960.
