Abstract

2,3-Dichlorobutadiene-1,3 is prepared by dehydrochlorinating 2,3,4 - trichloro - 1 - butene with aqueous alkali, acidifying the resultant mixture to a pH of 7.5 or less, and recovering the diene by steam distillation. An acid which is not volatile under the steam distillation conditions is preferred, e.g. sulphuric acid. Further purification of the diene derivative may be accomplished by vacuum distillation and conventional polymerization inhibitors may be present in the distillation step or steps.
