Abstract

The invention comprises a dimer of isophorone, and the preparation thereof by exposing an aqueous solution of isophorone, which may or may not contain acid or alkali, to U.V. light, preferably for at least 24 hours. The dimer readily hydrogenates to give the corresponding dihydric alcohol. I.R. and U.V. spectra show that the dimer is a cyclic diketone with no ethylenic unsaturation. The dimer may be used as an intermediate in the manufacture of esters having an application to detergent and plasticiser fields, and also in polishing and sealing compounds.
