Abstract
2-Butene-1, 4-diol in liquid form which contains an ester impurity is purified by treating the impure liquid diol or an aqueous solution thereof with an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide in an amount and for a time sufficient to combine stoichiometrically with the amount of ester impurity desired to be removed, and then distilling off the butenediol. The impure butenediol is suitably obtained by hydrogenation of butynediol. Examples are given. Specification 832,141 is referred to.
