Abstract
771,568. Anodic esterification processes. OEHMAN, P. V. May 18, 1954, No. 14517/54. Class 41. In the production of esters by anodic esterification, e.g. of ethylene, propylene, butylene, methyl pentadiene, butadiene and crotonic acid, in which the catholyte is an aqueous solution and the anolyte is a solution in an organic solvent such as acetone, the catholyte and anolyte being separated by a diaphragm which owing to excess pressure in the cathode space is filled with catholyte, increase in the concentration of water in the anolyte is counteracted by bringing the catholyte and/or the anolyte into contact with a chemically and/or physically acting water-binding substance. As a chemically acting substance, 5 to 10 per cent of anhydrous calcium nitrate may be added to the anolyte and also to the catholyte in such a proportion as to make it consist entirely of Ca(NO 3 ) 2 .4H 2 O. Alternatively the anolyte may be circulated a filter of activated aluminium oxide or activated silica.
