971,633. Glycerol and glycidol. STANDARD OIL CO. Jan. 30, 1961 [Feb. 17, 1960], No. 3513/61. Heading C2C. Glycerol and/or glycidol are prepared by contacting one or more haloglycerhydrins of general formula in which X and Y are hydroxyl groups or chlorine, bromine or iodine atoms and in which at least X or Y is chlorine, bromine or iodine, with a basic anion exchange resin. The process is preferably carried out at 20-60‹C. A mixture of monobromohydrin and dibromohydrin in aqueous solution may be used as starting material. Any glycidol in the product may be converted to glycerol by acid-catalyzed hydration e.g. by treatment with an acidic ion exchange resin. If any hydrogen halide is present in the starting material it may be removed by preheating the solution with a weakly basic anion exchange resin. Specifications 654,706 and 679,850 are referred to.
