Abstract

The invention comprises 4:5-benzotryptamine and its preparation wherein the 3-b -naphthyl hydriazone of 2,3-dioxo piperidine, produced by condensing the diazonium salt of b -naphthylamine with a salt of 3-carboxy-2-piperidine, is cyclised to give 5,6-benzo 1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydro- 1-oxo-b -carboline, the product saponified to give the corresponding salt of 4,5 benzotryptamine 2-carboxylic acid, the acid liberated by acidification and then decarboxylated.
