Abstract
Thiocyanate is recovered from aqueous waste liquor by addition of a mineral acid, e.g. sulphuric acid to the aqueous waste liquor followed by distillation under reduced pressure, the initial concentration of thiocyanate being equivalent to 2-30% w/w sodium thiocyanate, the molar ratio of mineral acid added to thiocyanate in the liquor being from 0.25-3.0 and the distillation pressure being from 1 mm. to 30 mm. of mercury. The aqueous waste liquor may require dilution or concentration to bring the thiocyanate concentration to the desired value and further treatment may be administered between acidification and distillation. Thiocyamic acid may be collected together with water distilled off, or may be collected in suitable alkalis or by other well known means. Examples are given in one of which 99 gms. of liquor are diluted with 225 gms. of water before 16.6 ccs. of 98% sulphuric acid are added thereto. The resulting acidified liquor was distilled at a pressure of 2 cms. of mercury and 99.8% of thiocyanate present was recovered, partly as sodium thiocyanate.
