Abstract

The concentration of aqueous acetic acid is effected by azeotropic distillation with paraldehyde. Any remaining paraldehyde may be depolymerized and distilled off and then absorbed in paraldehyde containing a little sulphuric acid to convert it into paraldehyde. Preferably, the azeotropic distillation is effected under reduced pressure to bring the boiling-point below 80 DEG C. so as to avoid any depolymerization of the paraldehyde. The initial acid may be first extracted with paraldehyde, the extract being then treated as described above.
