Abstract
331,637. Soc. Anon. des Distilleries des Deux-Sevres. March 20, 1929, [Convention date]. Addition to 312,046. Drawings to Specification. Carboxylic acids; formic acid; propionic acid. -The process of the parent Specification is applied to the extraction from aqueous solutions of acids of the fatty series, other than acetic acid. In an example propionic acid is extracted by means of butyl propionate, and the extract is dehydrated by distillation with an entraining liquid consisting of a petroleum fraction boiling between 138-140‹ C. With water this forms an azeotropic mixture boiling at 90‹ C., while the propionic acid forms with it a second mixture boiling at 134‹ C., which when condensed separates into two layers on the addition of a trace of water. In a similar way, formic acid is extracted by means of amyl formate, and is distilled with normal heptane; water distils off with the heptane at 79‹ C., followed by formic acid and heptane at 79.5‹ C. The apparatus used is identical with that of the parent Applica. tion.
