Abstract
Acetic, formic, or other aliphatic acid is extracted from its aqueous solutions by means of a solvent consisting of isopropyl ether and another solvent of lower boiling-point than the acid and having a high partition coefficient in respect of both weak and strong aqueous solutions of the acid, such as ethyl acetate ethyl formate, methyl acetate and methyl propionate suitable proportions being 60-80 per cent of isopropyl ether and 40-20 per cent of ester. The extraction may be effected in a long vertical extraction column, the solvent being admitted near the bottom and the dilute acid at the top. The extract is fractionally distilled and the solvent is returned to the extraction apparatus.
