Abstract

In a process for obtaining dehydrated alcohol free from fusel oil from crude aqueous alcohol by contacting the crude spirit with dehydrating material capable of increasing the alcohol content of the spirit in the vapour phase to about 95 per cent, and driving off the alcohol face from fusel oil by distillation, the fusel oil is prevented from accumulating in the system by withdrawal from the distillation column or by removal from the residual liquid. The dehydrating agent employed is preferably a fatty acid salt or salts, e.g. potassium acetate as described in Specification 368,793 or mixtures of potassium and sodium acetates. and the apparatus described in the above Specification may be used.
