Abstract

In a process for the dehydration of alcohol as described in Specification 368,793 in which alcohol vapour is treated in countercurrent with a solution of an anhydrous hygroscopic salt, e.g. dissolved in absolute alcohol, e.g. potassium acetate or with a mixture of potassium and sodium acetates as described in Specification 393,265, these salts may be displaced wholly or in part by other acetates or by alkali or alkaline-earth salts of other fatty acids, e.g. formates, propionates, &c. Lithium acetate is particularly suitable also magnesium or calcium acetate. A suitable mixture comprises 70 parts potassium acetate, 20 parts sodium acetate, and 10 parts calcium acetate.
