Abstract

Double compounds of theophylline with water-soluble salts of m-hydroxybenzoic acid are prepared by interaction of the components in the presence of a solvent such as water. The products possess therapeutic properties. The process may be effected by (1) reacting 1 mol. of theophylline with 2 mols. of an alkali metal salt or 1 mol. of the neutral magnesium salt of m-hydroxybenzoic acid; (2) treating 1 mol. of theophylline with 2 mols. of m-hydroxybenzoic acid and adding sufficient alkali metal or magnesium hydroxide to give a neutral product; (3) reacting 1 mol. of an alkali metal compound of theophylline with 1 mol. of an alkali metal salt of m-hydroxybenzoic acid and 1 mol. of the free acid, or with 2 mols. of an alkali metal salt of the acid with the addition of one equivalent of a stronger acid. An example is given.
