Abstract

In the production of ethylene glycol by hydrolysis of dichlorethane, the hydrolysis is effected in presence of ammonium salts or ammonia so that the chlorine appears as ammonium chloride. The ammonia may be added as carbonate or bicarbonate, or a mixture of calcium carbonate and ammonium sulphate. In examples: (1) dichlorethane is heated to 160--170 DEG C. in an autoclave in presence of calcium carbonate, and ammonium sulphate is added gradually, with stirring; after the removal of calcium sulphate, the glycol is recovered by distillation; (2) the hydrolysis is effected under similar conditions with addition of ammonia solution, so as to maintain an acidity below 1 N.ALSO:Ammonium chloride is obtained as a bye-product in the hydrolysis of dichlorethane in presence of ammonia or an ammonium salt such as the carbonate or bicarbonate. In examples (1) dichlorethane is heated to 160--170 DEG C. in an autoclave in presence of calcium carbonate, and ammonium sulphate is added gradually, with stirring; (2) the hydrolysis is effected under similar conditions with addition of ammonia solution, so as to maintain an acidity below in.
