Abstract

Mercury-carrotted fur or felt prepared therefrom is boiled in water to which has been added an ammonium salt of a strong acid to remove carbonates and/or bicarbonates. Suitable salts are ammonium sulphate and chloride. The ammonium salt may be added in amount chemically equivalent to the amount of carbonate and bicarbonate dissolved in the water, in which case the solution should be boiled for 10 minutes prior to the boiling of the fur or felt, or alternatively it may be added in excess, in which case no preliminary boiling of the water is necessary. In an example, to 100,000 parts of natural well water of 13.6 degrees (French) total hardness 20 parts of ammonium chloride is added, and the solution boiled for 10 minutes. A mercury-carrotted felt hood is then boiled for 15 minutes in the water, and is found to have suffered no discoloration as a result of the boiling.ALSO:Water containing dissolved carbonates and/or bicarbonates is purified by addition of an ammonium salt of a strong acid and boiled. It may then be used for boiling mercury-carrotted fur or felt prepared therefrom (see Group IV(c)). The ammonium salt may be added in amount chemically equivalent to the dissolved carbonate and bicarbonate, in which case the solution should be boiled for 10 minutes prior to boiling the fur or felt, or it may be added in excess, in which case no preliminary boiling is necessary. Suitable salts are ammonium chloride and sulphate. In an example 20 parts of ammonium chloride is added to 100,000 parts of natural well water of 13.6 degrees (French) total hardness and the solution boiled for 10 minutes. A mercury-carrotted felt hood suffered no discoloration on being boiled for 15 minutes in the resulting water.
