521,146. Softening hides and skins. BREACH, A. M. Oct. 11, 1938, No. 29442. [Class 76] Hides and skins are softened prior to tanning by treatment with an aqueous solution of a metaphosphate, e.g., sodium metaphosphate as the sole softening agent together with sufficient acid to produce a final pH value of approximately 2À6 in the bath. Substances having buffering or antiseptic effect, such as sodium chloride, may be added to the bath. Specification 471,753 is referred to.
