379,300. Two-stage tanning. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Merritt, M. M.; Middleton, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) April 25, 1931, No. 12278. Convention date, Jan. 12. [Class 76.] In a process cf mineral tanning, e.g. with chromium compounds, a hide or skin is treated with a solution which does not in itself tan during the period of exposure to the solution, and is then slicked out and treated in that condition with an agent which co-operates with that first applied to effect the tanning. By this procedure the fibres are so set that shrinkage is prevented. The first bath may consist, for example, of a solution of potassium bichromate acidif ed with hydrochloric acid the second treatment being effected by sodium thiosulphate (hypo) solution. The treatment in the slicked out condition need not be long enough to complete the tanning, since as soon as the fibres have been sufficiently set the hides may be removed from their supports.
