Abstract
397,129. Tanning and dyeing. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Merritt, M. M. ; Middleton, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Feb. 11, 1932, No. 4043. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1931. [Class 76.] Tanning or simultaneous tanning and dyeing is effected by treating the skins &.c. in a bath in which the treating materials are gradually dissolved as treatment proceeds. This is effected by placing the skins &c. in the usual salt solution in a drum together with tanning material contained in waxed paper bags, enclosed in outer fabric bags, with or without dyeing material. similarly enclosed. The paper bags are ruptured when drumming is commenced and the material slowly dissolves. In chrome tanning the usual reducing agent, e.g. sodium thiosulphate, may be introduced after preliminary treatment with tanning and dyeing agents. After tanning the skins may be slicked out in the manner set forth in Specification 377,224. When acid aniline dyes are employed a first tanning bath contains sodium bichromate and an acid and also the dye in separate bags, and the skins are then treated in a second bath comprising chromium oxide, Cr2O3, dissolved in hydrochloric acid, sodium thiosulphate being added finally as reducing agent. Skins to be tanned and dyed in the manner described are advantageously submitted to a second fleshing operation before being placed in the bath. Specification 20403/89, [Class 76, Leather], also is referred to.
