Abstract

444,690. Making leather. TANNING PROCESS CO., 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Merritt, M. M. ; Middleton, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Sept. 25, 1934, No. 27464. Convention date, Oct. 2, 1933. [Class 76] A process of chrome tanning consists in treating the hide with a soluble chrome tanning substance, a soluble chrome substance not in itself tanning, and with a substance (in particular sodium sulphate), adapted to increase the tanning effect and subsequently treating, the hide with a reducing agent to render the non-self tanning chrome substance effective. A suitable tanning bath may be prepared by mixing in aqueous solution basic chromic sulphate, sodium dichromate and sulphuric acid in sufficient quantity to produce normal chromic sulphate, and to convert part of the dichromate into sodium sulphate and chromic acid. After treatment for say half an hour part of the liquor is drawn off and a reducing agent, e.g. sodium thiosulphate, is added. When chromium salts other than the sulphate are used sodium sulphate is added to produce the increased tanning effect referred to. The tanning materials may be added to the tanning bath in canvas bags. Specification 12849 /93, [Class 76], is referred to.
