Abstract

472,973. Making leather. ROHM, O. April 1, 1936, No. 9655. Convention date, Feb. i, 1936. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 3, 1936.] [Class 76] Hides and skins are unhaired and prepared for tanning by treatment with a solution comprising one or more fungic tryptases and one or more oxidizing agents other than bichromates, permanganates and chlorine containing oxidizing agents, the bath being at weakly alkaline to weakly acid pH. The tryptases employed may suitably be those from types of aspergillus. Suitable oxidizing agents are alkali nitrates and nitrites, hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide, sodium perborate. Common salt or sodium sulphate may be added to the bath. Organic compounds containing hydroxyl groups may also be added, e.g. alcohols, oxyacids, carbohydrates, phenols and naphthols; grape sugar, lactates or glycerine are particular examples of such additions. The skins may be softened with sodium sulphite and carbonate prior to the enzyme bath. After the enzyme treatment they may be treated in an alkaline bath, e.g. of sodium carbonate, the hair in some cases having first been removed. Specification 472.911 is referred to.
