474,991. Treating hides. PANCREOL, Ltd., and PICKARD, C. E. May 29, 1936, No. 15168. [Class 76] A process for " soaking back hides and skins consists in treating the skins with a dilute solution (up to 0À25 per cent) of papain or bromelin. Activating and other salts may be added to the bath, e.g. ammonium chloride or sulphate, sodium sulphide, and also animal enzymes and inert powders (wood flour, kaolin, barytes) or fillers (sugar, dextrin). The hides &c. are tumbled in the solution for an hour or two and if of specially resistant type may be then " broken on the beam " and returned to the liquor for a further treatment.
