Abstract
A composition suitable for modifying mucopolysaccharides in hides and skins to facilitate depilation and the subsequent extraction of gelatine or glue comprises 0,025-50 per cent by weight of a commercial preparation of one or more carbohydrases, e.g. polygalacturonidase, elastase, pectinase, hyaluronidase, chondroitinase, diastase, and 0,25-10 per cent by weight of a buffer solution within the pH range 3-12,5. The buffer solution may contain sodium acetate and acetic acid, sodium formate and formic acid, borax and boric acid, caustic soda and glycine, caustic soda and potassium dihydrogen phosphate. The composition may also contain trypsin, papain, flour starch, bran or gelatine, dextrose, sucrose, maltose or galactose, yeast, sodium chloride, calcium pyrophosphate, potassium iodide, hydrogen peroxide, and citrate, hydrosulphide, copper, zinc and chromium ions.
