Abstract
346,836. Preliminary treatment of hides and skins. JOHNSON, J. Y., 47, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt. Ges. ; Frankfort - on - Main, Germany.) Jan. 18, 1930, Nos. 1826 and 6106. [Class 76.] The epidermal layer is removed from hides and skins and they are simultaneously bated by treatment with baths or pastes comprising enzymes of carica papaya in the proportion of at least 0.5 per cent of the weight of the soaked hides. The materials are kept in a neutral or alkaline condition and activating agents or other enzymes may be added. As activating agents hydrocyanic acid or a cyanide and parachlor-meta cresol may be used. In the preparation of the bath to assist the action of the enzyme and to adjust the hydrogen ion concentration the following substances are employed according to examples, in various admixtures; sodium phosphates, potassium bromide, potassium and sodium nitrate, sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, sodium hydrate, ammonia, lime, formic acid, boric acid. For the purpose of making up a paste with a prepared solution levigated chalk may be used.
