Abstract

557,594. Gelatine. WIGGINS, TEAPE & CO. (1919), Ltd., EDGE, S. R. H., and KNAGGS, J. June 23, 1942, No. 8591. [Class 121] Gelatine is prepared from waste chrome leather by steeping the leather for 24 hours or more in a solution containing an organic acid capable of forming complex salts with chromium, together with an excess of ammonia. The leather is drained and transferred to a solution of caustic soda containing the same acid. The treated leather is washed and gelatine extracted from it by water at 70-80‹ C. The leather may before treatment be bleached, for example, by sulphur dioxide. Citric, tartaric or lactic acids may be used.
