Abstract

473,200. Tanning. PENSEL, G. R. April 7, 1936, No. 10271. Convention date, April 13, 1935. [Class 76] Leather is produced by treating skins with a metal tanning solution, a water soluble salt of acetic, formic, oxalic, lactic, tartaric or citric acid and an aldehyde tanning agent, the individual quantities of the tanning components being insufficient for complete tanning. Chrome or alum are preferred metal tanning agents and formaldehyde a suitable aldehyde, sodium acetate the preferred salt. The pickled skins are treated in a bath of the metallic tanning agent at an acid pH, sodium acetate &c. is then added and the pH raised up to about 4À5 to 6À0 by gradual additions of an alkaline substance, finally formaldehyde is added and the temperature raised if desired up to 140‹ F.
