Abstract

482,286. Tanning. LLOYD, G. F. Sept. 23, 1936, No. 25872. [Class 76] Hides and skins, which have been previously pickled, are tanned by treatment first with a solution containing formalin and alcohol and then with an alkaline solution to close the pores of the skin and retain the tanning agent therein, the whole process occupying less than one hour. Vegetable extracts and oil may be added to the tanning liquor and also fillers such as french chalk. The tanning solution may be sprayed or painted on the hides. A suitable tanning solution comprises water 1¢ gals., alcohol 1¢ gals., and formalin (40 per cent) 3 pints.
