Abstract
477,536. Making leather. ROHM, O. July 1, 1936, Nos. 18295 and 18296. Convention dates, July 2, 1935 and Sept. 16, 1935. [Class 76] Hides, which may be pickled or unpickled, are tanned by first treating them with sulphite cellulose extract and then in a bath or baths containing silicic acid or an acidified silicate, e.g. water glass. Bichromates may be added to the sulphite cellulose extract. Silicic acid baths, except the first, may also contain sulphite cellulose extract. Small amounts of other tanning. agents may be added to the tanning bath, e.g. chrome or potash alum, aluminium formate or a condensation product of naphthalene-sulphonic acid and formaldehyde. The tanned hides may be further treated with hard fats or waxes, e.g. tallow, paraffin, carnauba wax, synthetic waxes, &c., or the grain side may be treated with neat's-foot oil. A mixture of paraffin and tetrahydronaphthalene is suitable for the greasing treatment.
