377,284. Combination tanning processes. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Merritt, M. M. ; Middleton, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) April 24, 1931, No. 12136. Convention date, Jan. 12. [Class 76.] A two stage tanning process consists in first treating the hide or skin while in a stretched-out condition with a mineral tanning agent, e.g. a chromium compound or another tanning agent, e.g. formaldehyde, other than a vegetable or animal extract, and after the fibres have set completing the tanning by means of a vegetable tanning agent. The hide &c. is spread out on a supporting surface with the grain side outward, much of the watery content of the hide being removed in the process. The grain surface is then treated by the application of a strong basic chrome liquor and after sufficient time has elapsed to allow the fibres to set the hide is removed and drummed with a vegetable extract.
