Abstract

528,459. Furs. MARTIN & SONS, Ltd., C. W., and BEELEY, E. April 28, 1939, No. 12824. [Class 76] Furs or skins, e.g., lambskins, are treated to improve their quality by applying formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst comprising an acid or a substance capable of liberating an acid on heating, such as aluminium chloride or a salt of a weak base, preferably in dilute solution, and following this by extension and heat treatment such as by hot-ironing to a temperature of 190‹ C. or higher. The solution is preferably aged for some days before applying to the skin, after which the skin is put aside for several hours before further treatment. The process may be applied after dyeing of the fur or skin and may be combined with known methods of treatment using acid or setting agents before ironing. An example is given.
