Abstract

230,879. Blockey, J. R., and Walker & Sons, Ltd., W. Oct. 16, 1923. Vegetable tanning; treatment preliminary to tanning.-The of hides and skins during tanning is controlled by regulating the acidity (pH) of the tanning liquor and maintaining it constant during the whole process, by adding thereto neutral salts (such as sodium chloride). The tanning liquor may be brought to such a pH as would produce much greater than is desired and sufficient neutral salt is added to bring the swelling down to the exact point required. The skin or hide may be brought to the desired degree of swelling prior to immersion in the tanning liquor by a preliminary treatment in a liquor consisting of acid, water, and a neutral salt of the same pH as is to be maintained in the tanning liquor.
