Abstract

In depilating fleshed hides or skins before they are pickled, chrome-tanned, re-tanned and fat-liquored, they are soaked for 10 to 50 hours, e.g. in an intermittently rotating drum, in an aqueous alkaline solution having an initial pH between 10 and 12 and a temperature between 15 and 40 DEG C. The weight ratio of hides or skins to solution is between 1:50 and 1:4. The solution contains sufficient proteolytic enzyme, e.g. derived from the treatment of keratinaceous material with Streptomyces fradiae I.M. strain No. 3739, to provide a keratinase activity between 119,000 and 476,000 keratinase units per pound of hides or skins. The solution may be a solution of calcium hydroxide containing between 0.5 and 2.0%, preferably between 1.0 and 1.5%, of calcium hydroxide, and between 2 and 25%, preferably between 3.0 and 5.0%, of water, based on the soaked weight of the hides or skins. The solution may contain also 3.0% of borax and 0.2% of a bactericide. The hides or skins are then removed from the solution and hair is removed mechanically, as by scudding with a beam knife. An aqueous solution of sodium chloride, calcium formate and sulphuric acid may be used in the subsequent pickling.
