Abstract

Bacterial damage to hides and skins before or during their curing, or during their conversion into parchment, leather, or furskins, is prevented by treatment with weakly acid, neutral or weakly alkaline, water-soluble salts of chlorous acid, e.g. alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorites. Examples are concerned with using sodium chlorite soak liquors for dried wool sheepskin and oxhide, wet-salting hides and skins with salt containing 1 per cent of sodium chlorite, brining hides and skins with brine containing 0,25 per cent of sodium chlorite, treating newly-flayed hides and skins with sodium chlorite before drying, treating hides and skins with sodium chlorite before or during bating or puering treatments, preventing "in the pile" heating of sheepskins treated with unhairing paint by the use of sodium chlorite during the preliminary soaking or by the incorporation of sodium chlorite in the unhairing paint.
