Abstract
In bating hides or skins, which may have been limed with lime and sulphides, they are subjected, in an aqueous liquor at acid pH, e.g., between pH 3 and 5, to the action of a mixture of proteolytic enzymes (a) active at acid pH and proteolytic enzymes (b) having optimum activity at alkaline pH. The bating may be effected at a temperature ranging from 20-30 DEG C. Enzymes (a) may be derived from Aspergillus microorganisms. Specified enzymes (a) are: protease from Aspergillus flavus and protease from Aspergillus parasiticus. Enzymes (b) may be provided by pancreas tryptase or derived from Streptomyces bacterial cultures. The weight ratio of enzymes (a) to (b) may range between 10:90 and 90:10. The bating liquor may also contain: carbohydrases, e.g. derived from microorganisms, neutral salts such as sodium chloride and/or ammonium sulphate, and an organic acid, such as formic acid, a -hydroxy-isobutyric acid or b -naphthalene sulphonic acid.
